Terms of service
Be honest. Verify your own dates.
Margin helps you see what's due, but it is not the system of record for your deadlines — you confirm those against your instructor and your LMS. Below is the long version, in plain language.

These terms govern your use of the Margin website, browser extension, control-plane service, and device, provided by Marginalia (“Margin”, “we”). By using any of them you agree to these terms and to the privacy policy. If you don't agree, don't use Margin.
You must be 13 or older. Margin is a personal-productivity tool for your own coursework; it is not offered to schools or districts as a provider of student educational records, and we play no school-official role.
Margin assists with deadlines. It is not the record of them.
Margin reads assignment data from sources you authorize (your LMS session, calendar feeds you add, and syllabi you upload) and helps you see what's due — in your Todoist, in the extension's view, and on a Margin device. You authorize every source with your own credentials; Margin never logs in for you and never sees your LMS password.
Accuracy. When Margin reads a syllabus, it shows the dates it found and asks you to verify them before they're used. Automated capture and parsing can miss, misread, or mistime an item. You are responsible for confirming your own deadlines against the authoritative source (your instructor, your LMS). Margin is provided “as is”, without warranty that any date, capture, or sync is complete or correct, to the fullest extent the law allows.
You're responsible for your account and the credentials you connect (Google sign-in, your Todoist token). Margin's servers never receive or store your coursework or assignment titles — they stay in your own Todoist and on your own devices. We do custody an encrypted copy of your Todoist access token on our servers so we can hand it to a device you've claimed; by stated policy we never use that token to read your tasks. That is a policy commitment, not a technical impossibility. Everything else we hold is described in the privacy policy, and you can export or delete the data we hold on our servers at any time.
- Preview — free. A taste; writes nothing.
- Margin Pass — $9.99 per semester, non-renewing. It does not auto-renew and nothing bills your card again on its own; an honest end-of-term email lets it lapse.
- Margin device — a one-time purchase with the software included; the rung where recurring payment stops.
Paid checkout isn't open yet — today every plan leads to the waitlist. When it opens, prices and availability may change; the price you're shown at checkout is the price that applies to that purchase. Paid checkout runs through a merchant-of-record, who is the seller of record and handles payment, tax, receipts, and refunds. Refund requests go through them under their posted policy; reach us first at hello@margin.computer and we'll help.
We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use Margin for your own coursework while your plan is current. Don't: resell or redistribute the software or a license key beyond its seat limit; reverse-engineer the service to extract another user's data; use Margin to access an account or LMS you aren't authorized to use; or abuse the service (automated hammering, attempts to exceed rate limits). A license key is tied to its seats; deleting your account frees a seat but the key itself survives and can be redeemed again.
Margin depends on third parties you bring or authorize — notably Todoist (required for sync), your LMS, your calendar provider, Google (sign-in), and the merchant-of-record. Your use of each is governed by that party's own terms; we're not responsible for their availability, accuracy, or acts. If Todoist, your LMS, or a calendar feed changes or breaks, Margin's capture or sync may degrade.
We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of Margin. If we wind the service down, we intend to give reasonable notice and to leave your local and Todoist data intact (it's already yours). We may update these terms; material changes are announced as the privacy policy describes, and continued use after the effective date is acceptance.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Margin is provided “as is” and we disclaim implied warranties; we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages, including a missed deadline (see §03). Nothing here limits liability that can't be limited by law. Some jurisdictions don't allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
