Writing about Margin. The facts, dated.

A short description to quote, who makes it, when each version reached the Chrome Web Store, and the logo and screenshots. Margin is made by one person, and every email is read by that person.

In short

Margin is a free Chrome extension for college students. It reads your upcoming Canvas assignments and shows them in a free side panel or your Todoist. The Margin Pass keeps the whole term: $9.99 a semester, bought inside the extension, and it does not renew.

Margin is built by Mitch Ring, a physics student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. It is independent and unfunded: there is no team and there are no investors.

What Margin reads, what it keeps, and where, is set out in the privacy policy. The prices are on the pricing page.

Who makes it

I'm a physics major at Illinois. I grew tired of opening five tabs every morning to figure out what was due. Margin is what I built instead.

Margin is run by Mitch Ring as a sole proprietorship trading as Marginalia. No school, the University of Illinois included, runs, endorses or partners with Margin. More on the about page.

Dates

Versions of the extension, by the day the Chrome Web Store published them
Date What changed
Version 2.5.2, the first public version, on the Chrome Web Store. Before this, Margin was a small private beta.
Version 2.5.3. The extension took its current name: Margin | Canvas Assignment Planner + Todoist.
Version 2.6.0. Fewer duplicates, fewer dead ends: if you read both Canvas and your Canvas calendar feed, an assignment no longer shows up twice.
Version 2.7.0. Groundwork, mostly out of sight.
Version 2.8.1. Margin Study, a page of its own: exams, topics, and where the next block goes.
Version 2.9.0. The side panel is now free for everyone.

Every version, with what changed in it, is in the changelog. The longer story is in the build log.
